SALTILLO, Coahuila, July 25, 2008.- Puerto
Rico defeated Canada in straight sets and
will face the Dominicans in the semi final
round tomorrow of the NORCECA Women’s
Junior Volleyball Tournament.
The Puerto Ricans, second in Pool B, went
out with big offense, knowing that in the
other side they had the best blocking
team, and with their good technical-tactical
game, led all the way.
Always looking to cause damage with their
violent serves, category they are leading,
the Puerto Ricans defended well and once
again showed the counter attack as one of
their lethal weapon to take the Canadians
out of their path.
Outside hitter Stephanie Enright was the
best scorer with 14 points, 10 in attacks,
and her countrywomen the opposite Lorraine
Aviles had 10.
For the Canadians, Sofie Schalagintweit
had only 9 points while none of the
Canadians reached the double figures.
Luis "Papo" García: "We played weith great
respect, because Canada is a good team,
strong and tall, we went out with the
strategy of playing against the blocking
and execute well in our serves, reception
and defense. When you serve offensvely and
with location, you are risking the serve
and obviously you lose some points, but we
will continue using our strategic services.”
Normand Bouchard, coach of Canadá: "Puerto
Rico played very well, we congratulated
their players, they were smart and we
could not pass the ball well.”
Stephanie Enright, captain of Puerto Rico:
"We played very carefully against our
opponents knowing that it is a tall team,
but battled hard because we want to win
tomorrow and qualify to the World
Championship, it is tough but that is the
goal.”
Sofie Schagintweit, captain of Canada: "We
didn’t play well, I don’t know where my
team was, maybe sleeping, we were hoping
to pass the ball but it couldn’t be today.” |
